(Washington, D.C.) - Montana's senior U.S. Senator Max Baucus said temporary federal firefighters, many of whom are fighting or have fought wildfires in Montana, will now have access to health care benefits. Because of the seasonal nature of wildland firefighting, many federal firefighters were not previously eligible for health care and retirement benefits.
"Even though they might not work year round, wildland firefighters work to save lives and property, which is a lasting contribution to our communities. Firefighters put their lives on the line and we owe them our thanks, along with the benefits they and their families have earned," said Baucus.
The Office of Personnel Management, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Department of Interior announced this week that temporary federal firefighters will now have access to the same health care benefits federal employees receive.
