Baucus: Construction, Tourism Jobs Rely on Going to the Sun Road

Senator Announces New Resources to Improve Going to the Sun Road

Posted: Monday, July 30, 2012

(Washington, D.C.) - Montana's senior U.S. Senator Max Baucus announced today a $3 million grant to repair Going to the Sun Road from Siyeh Bend to St. Mary.

"Going to the Sun Road is the crown jewel of Montana which is why I've long fought to make sure this historic road has the funding necessary for maintenance.  This is great news and a prime example of why the Highway Bill is so important for Montana," said Baucus, who rode a Harley Davidson motorcycle along the iconic highway in 2003 highlighting the need for infrastructure investments on the road.  "The Highway Bill means more good-paying jobs for Montana families and will make federal funding available for important stretches of highway like Going to the Sun Road.

Baucus helped write and pass a new highway bill which is estimated to create or sustain 13,500 jobs to Montana.  The bill authorizes grants like the one announced today from the Department of Transportation's Public Lands Highways Discretionary (PLHD) Program.

The program is designed to improve highways and transit facilities that are within or adjacent to Indian reservations and federal public lands. PLHD Program funds may be used for the state/local matching share for federal aid highway funds and there is no matching requirement for grant applicants.  More information on the grant is available online HERE.
